LA PRACTICA this monday March 30th

Hi everybody, LA PRACTICA will start with a new format this Monday and hopefully this time it will work better for everybody. Essentially we are dividing the time in 3 slots. From 6:30 to 7:30 we’ll be focused on beginners and reviewing all the fundamentals taught by Facundo during the workshop. I strongly recommend all of you who attended the workshop to join us for this segment. We’ll work on the embrace, posture, footwork and the works. From 7:30 to 8:00 we’ll do a warm up lead by Marcello practicing the walk, dissociation, posture and balance against the mirror. These exercises are essential for all levels and should be regular practice for all of us to do at home as well. 10 minutes everyday will make a huge difference. From 8:00 to 10:00 we’ll have an open practica focused on the needs of on-going dancers. Feel free to come a practice on your own style and terms. We won’t intervene unless asked to. We encourage mutual sharing and fluid communication discussing the pros, cons and how to’s of different steps. Self exploration and self discovery. Music will play in the background and lights will remain on. We will observe tango etiquette, we must get used to it. On this sense we ask those working on a step who need to maintain a static position to stay in the center of the room. Then we’ll try to keep 2 separate lanes, the inside lanes for beginners and those moving slower, the outside lane for those moving faster and more experienced. With the time as we develop better musicality we should all converge into a natural flow marked by the rhythm of the music. Everybody is welcome to participate in the 3 slots. The cost is $5 for the first and last slot ($5 for one, $10 for both) with the exception of advanced dancers willing to join us early and help beginners who will continue paying $5 for the whole evening. Hope to see you there ! Fernando ./ LaPracticaTango@live.com

Second Monday, Second Success !

Aloha Tangueros, I just want to say thank you for supporting us on this new adventure. Our second night superseded again our expectations with the very active participation of experienced dancers of our community plus lots of new faces who showed up anxious to incursion into this fantastic world of tango. We had a lot of fun again.

Marcello did a great job leading a workout where we lined up in front of the mirror to work on several walking exercises. These is fundamental for our development as dancers, fortifying and toning our body, while relaxing it so we get used to the different movements involved in the steps and figures. We worked on posture, walk, pivots and dissociation. We well keep doing this in the future, I don’t know about you but I need it a lot. If you manage to memorize these exercises and practice them at home for only ten minutes a day the difference in your dance will be astronomical. So lets keep practicing !

Last Monday was marked with a strong presence of total beginners what presented us with the need to focus on them untile they had elements so they could start moving and have some fun. This was not free as it was only possible at the expense to shorten the practice time. Not too fare for the experienced dancers indeed, who came to work on their skills but hey, they joined right in and voluntarily pared up with the beginners, what a wonderful way to welcome them to the community. Right on ! So big, big, big, thank you to Rita, Kathleen, Gylian and Alfred for such a wonderful attitude.

While well intended we are still new into this, we learn as we go, and we adapt as needed. We have developed already a new format so this does not happen again and both beginners and experienced dancers have plenty of time and space to practice their own. We'll start with this format on Monday 30th., follow up on our CALENDAR

From 6:30 to 7:30 LA PRACTICA will be focused on beginners. Advanced dancers willing to review the basics and help around are welcome to come and help but everything will be oriented to those starting up. – $5.00 at the door including workout. – $10.00 including workout and practice until 10.00 pm.

From 7:30 to 8:00 we'll have our workout for all levels. Beginners will be invited to stay and this is a great oportunity for experienced dancers to join in with these always needed exercises to help refine your style. – $5.00 at the door – Includes practice until 10 pm.

From 8:00 to 10:00 LA PRACTICA will be focused on experienced dancers to explore on their own, share, exchange, discover. While help will always be available this is not a directed practica, our proposition is to self learn through experimentation, trial and error. Music will play continueously in the background. Feel free to ask if you want any music in particular. Beginners can stay and practice or sit and watch. There is a lot to learn just by watching ... – $5.00 at the door

Please feel free to email us your feedback that we allways find valuable. Aloha to all and thank you again !!!

Yes, after great expectations since his first visit last year Facundo is back in Maui with us.

Starting next Tuesday at 7 pm at Curves Gym, in Pukalani (95 Makawao Ave #202) he will offer a series of 8 classes, all of them followed by a practice for a total of 3hs of tango with the Maestro.

We'll be working on the fundamentals as well as some new steps to add to your vocabulary. Facundo's was fenomenal last year with his series on milonga.

It is also a great oportunity for beginners who want to start with the right foot. Facundo is a living legend who's been dancing and teaching profesionally since the early '50's . His dance is simple yet elegant and dynamic, true to the salon style.

Facundo Posadas is an icon in the world of Argentine Tango and the only Afro-Argentine traveling the world to share the roots of this dance by teaching Milonga and Candombe. Robert Farris Thompson writes of Facundo in his book Tango:The Art History of Love "today's master of Argentine tango, milonga, and jazz dance" and tells of the rich history of the Posadas family dating back to the 1800s.

Facundo started dancing at a young age and enjoyed dancing in Buenos Aires all his life. He’s been dancing since the early ‘50’s with many of the great orchestras of the Golden Age such as that of Jose Basso, Anibal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Juan D'Arienzo, Carlos DiSarli, Miguel Calo, and Jose Colangelo. Since 1997 he has traveled extensively teaching and performing at festivals and tango communities around the world such as the Miami Tango Fantasy (8 years), Tango Society of Boston (9 years), New York City's La Nacional (5 years), and Triangulo Tanguero of North Carolina (6 years). AND NOW WE HAVE HIM ON HAWAII !!!

He has also been in 6 films including Tango The Obsession in which Facundo also narrates, Tango Un Giro Extraño, Despabilate Amor Afro-Argentinos, Negro Che and El Cafe de Los Maestros (by Gustavo Santaolaya filmed in the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires). He has also been featured in many television shows for Buenos Aires television as well as the BBC in London. Those of us who took his classes during the past tango fest in august know the beauty and simplicity of his elegant style, making it possible and easy to understand for dancers of all levels and all ages. Facundo is living history, to me learning from him is like learning the Blues from BB King or John Lee Hooker. Facundo will help us work on all the fundamentals, posture, balance, walk, embrace, connection. His flexible and dynamic teaching method allows him to adapt to our particular needs making progress as we go, we learn exactly what we need at the time, not what’s written on a fixed program. This method proved fun and successful during his last visit. Experience the beauty and freedom of Tango Salon, after canyengue, the most old and traditional form of tango, elegant, playful and intense at the same time.

Learn the fundational elements that you can then translate to other forms of tango like Milonguero or Nuevo. Get to know those little simple tips and tricks that make the big difference and things will be possible for everybody. We will visit all four rhythms, Tango, Vals, Milonga, and Candombe, and if we are interested enough, we can have a full class dedicated to Traditional Candombe, a true African dance derived from the Congo traditional rhythms. Visit Facundo at www.facundoposadastango.com.ar for some images.

A new space to practice Tango Argentino in Maui

La Practica opens every monday at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center and welcome dancers of all levels who want to share and learn together.

We dance, we play, we talk, we watch, we connect. We learn by doing, think it might work ? give it a try ! We offer you the freedom to experience tango on your own terms, at your own pace.

Bring your partner and friends or come alone to make new ones. Leave reality outside the door and enter a world where tango fills the air in all possible forms. Show us what you have, it might be what we've been looking for. Tell us what you want, and we'll find it together.

Let tango grow from within yourself, from the inside out, and why not, transform your life.

Check our schedule or send us an email for more information. Occasionally we offer classes in charge of some of the most prestigious tango instructors during their visit.
